This mill harnesses the power of the wind to grind a variety of
natural dyes and pigments. The great stones grind chalk.
Tropical hardwoods are powered in the dyewood cutter tubs
to make dyes for wool and other fibers.
Mineral pigments such as yellow or red ochre are imported from
France and elsewhere. These are ground to a fine powder in the
totally enclosed ‘red room’ for use in oil and watercolour paints.
This mill is owned by the Mill Association “De Zaansche Molen”
This is the last working colour mill in the world and is leased by
V.O.F. De Kat. traders in antique colouring materials,
binders, varnishes, etc.
